The Rise of Australian Matcha Ceramics (feat. Adele Macer Ceramics)

Over the past year at markets we've been participating in markets like Finders Keepers and the Big Design Market and we’ve seen a beautiful trend emerging — more Australian ceramic artists are creating matcha-specific pieces.

From Chawan (matcha bowls) to Chasen Naoshi (whisk stands), handmade Matcha teaware are becoming increasingly available which is great news for those seeking to elevate their Matcha ritual with beautiful, carefully selected pieces.

Handmade ceramics don’t just look stunning — they change the feel of the ritual.  The solid weight of the bowl when you place your hands around it. The different glaze styles that you can observe and appreciate in your Matcha moment. The matching whisk holder that appeals to your aesthetics.

Why Handmade Matcha Ware is Growing

Home rituals — More people are embracing slow, intentional daily rituals.
Purposeful design— Bowls are shaped specifically for whisking and sipping.
Local craft — Buying handmade supports Australian makers and reduces shipping miles.

At recent design markets I’ve noticed shoppers levelling up from basic mugs to true Chawans which brings people closer to the traditional aspects of Japanese tea ceremony (Chanoyu).

You don't have to know or be overwhelmed by all the specifics of this ancient practise but having just a few items such as bowl, whisk and whisk holder can really enhance and improve your Matcha drinking experience.

Caring for Your Matcha Set

  • Rinse your bowl in warm water after use.
  • Always dry your whisk on its stand to extend your whisk life.
  • Avoid sudden temperature changes.
  • Hand-wash for best longevity.

A Simple Everyday Matcha

  1. Sift 2g (1 tsp) Matcha into your Matcha bowl.
  2. Add 30ml water, whisk briskly in a zig-zag until frothy.
  3. Add 100ml of milk if you are enjoying it as a Matcha Latte.
  4. If just having it as Usucha (thin Matcha with just water), top up with around 40ml water, whisk again briskly until frothy.

👉 Pair with our Everyday Matcha for lattes, or Premium Ceremonial for pure sipping.

Why Buy Handmade

A handmade bowl carries the story of its maker — every glaze variation, rim curve, and subtle differences reminds you this object was shaped by human hands. Investing in local artists like Adele Macer keeps your ritual beautifully grounded in craft.
